Mission Statement

The Westmoreland Volunteer Corps (WVC) is now accepting applications for a one-year program in the Washington, DC, area beginning in fall 2012. Persons of all faiths are welcome to participate. If you are a college senior or recent graduate with a passion for social justice and an interest in helping others, we encourage you to consider participating in our successful program. WVC has a 26-year history of changing lives -- of those who volunteer and those who benefit from their involvement. WVC identifies positions with approximately 12 participating agencies in Washington, DC, and suburban Maryland and Virginia. These agencies provide services such as employment counseling and search, case work for at-risk youth, maternal/child health care and other health programs, social and legal services and shelters for the homeless, refugee services, promotion of social justice, and support for the elderly. The goals of the participating agencies are matched with the interests, skills, academic training, and career goals of the five Volunteers. The positions at the agencies provide opportunities for Volunteers to explore possible career paths in social service, health care, law, housing, religion, education, and international aid, among others. Participating agency profiles are accessible from our website. Requirements: Minimum age 21, with a college degree or related work experience. Willingness to live simply on a limited income, cooperatively in community with 4 other young adults.

Description

The Westmoreland Volunteer Corps is a one-year domestic volunteer service program sponsored by Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ in Bethesda, MD, a few steps from Washington D.C. The program is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Five volunteers, chosen each year, live together in a former church parsonage with weekly support from a community counselor. Board members and members of the church provide additional mentorship and support to volunteers. Applications for the program may be submitted beginning December 15. The application period ends February 15. Short-listed applicants are invited to Washington beginning in early March to interview with service agencies and the WVC Board. The volunteer year begins Labor Day and ends in mid-August. Our program is linked to Americorps via the Catholic Volunteer Network, and Volunteers may be eligible for Americorps student loan deferments and educational benefits. We are also affiliated with the Volunteer Ministries program of the United Church of Christ.
