Mission Statement
Rebuilding the Wall, Inc. (RtW) stabilizes and empowers low-income families by providing them the opportunity for
homeownership through the renovation of vacant inner city properties. We are committed to combating social injustice by
building relationships across racial and socio-economic barriers; and we stabilize community by the recycling of resources
within the neighborhood. We are located in Indianapolis with the boundaries of: South to 22nd Street, North to Fall Creek
Waterway, East to Andrew J. Brown, and West to College Avenue.
Description
By providing safe and affordable rentals, transitional housing, and homeownership opportunities, we are providing very
low and low income families obtainable opportunities to share in the redevelopment of our community.
To ensure success, RtW engages our families with services to overcome their obstacles to homeownership through our
THRIVE opportunity that is designed to take families through an intensive two-year case management process that leads families
from being at risk of homelessness to homeownership. While the family is working their Family Plan to Homeownership
with their THRIVE case manager, they are also working alongside our staff and volunteers to rehab their future home. After
the purchase of their home, THRIVE services are continued for one year to prevent foreclosure and to help the family
continue to develop assets.
Our X-treme Jesus Crew Bible study serves as a youth mentoring program that includes Bible study, rewards for positive
school performance, field trips, scholarships to Camp Tecumseh through the Doc Denio Youth Foundation, annual Thanksgiving
Dinner, and annual Christmas Store. (Please note that participation in the X-treme Jesus Crew is not a requirement of
participation in the housing and THRIVE portions of Rebuilding The Wall.)
To achieve our mission of combating social injustice by building relationships across racial and socio-economic lines we
bring together persons of various backgrounds in our board structure, our staff, our volunteers and the THRIVE families.
Upon the completion of a home, we have a celebration that brings together a beautiful tapestry of persons to rejoice
over the accomplishment of the whole that none could have achieved alone. We have many college, school, civic, and church
groups come to serve with us. When a group comes for the first time to a work day on our housing rehabs, our Executive
Director tells the story of Rebuilding the Wall which includes the history of racial and social injustice that
contributed to the devestation of our urban neighborhoods and the hope of reconciliation that is bringing us together to rebuild.
We see this educational component to our volunteers as important as our work with low income families.
