Mission Statement
To build affordable housing at no-profit through a combination of volunteer labor, sweat equity and no-interest
mortgages. We act in partnership with the local community. Individuals, small businesses, corporations, foundations, partner
families, faith groups, and civic organizations all share in the vision of affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity
reaches out from Christian roots across denominational, faith, economic and racial lines to bring together people who are
concerned for their neighbors. We strive to develop and empower individuals and communities through the construction of
simple, decent, affordable homes.
Description
Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County was established in 1986 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
HFH International was founded in 1976 and now has over 1,600 affiliated projects in the United States and more than 250
projects in other countries.
To date, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has completed over 118 homes. We are the largest affiliate in the
Northeast in terms of housing production (of 210 affiliates from Delaware to Maine). Our mission compels us to respond to
an urgent and growing for need for affordable housing in our community, by building 20+ homes a year over the next five
years. In 2006, we achieved our goal of 20 houses; in 2007, we completed 16 homes. We will continue at this rate for the
next 4 years, empowering another 100+ families in New Castle County to become homeowners. This increased rate of house
building has elevated our affiliate to Community Builder status, the largest growth stage for a Habitat affiliate, placing
us among the top 5% of Habitat affiliates nationally.
We serve local families in the lowest income bracket who are living in substandard housing (25%-60% of median income
(earning approximately $18,025-$43,300 for a family of four) of which, 80% are single mothers. Selected candidates must
compete 225 hours of sweat equity toward the construction of their home and complete a housing counseling certificate
program where they learn new life skills.
