Mission Statement
Franciscans for the Poor provides an opportunity for individuals and groups to live out the Gospel message of justice through outreach to the poor and underserved. Participants will: Build community in a simple life style; Volunteer with a variety of agencies that address human needs; Integrate prayer and reflection on the experiences of meeting Christ through the poor and; Discern a personal response to poverty and injustice.
Description
Franciscans For The Poor, founded in 1998, hosts campus ministries, church youth groups, families and individuals for 1 week at the Tau Community House in Cincinnati, Ohio. Located <1 mile from I-75 and 6 miles north of downtown Cincinnati, participants travel to an array of social service agencies volunteering to assist those in need. Participants arrive Sunday departing on Friday. Participants will live in community sharing meals, chores and prayers. Participants normally volunteer every day from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Time is allowed for reflection and recreation. More than 500 participants each year give more than 10,000 hours to social service agencies in Greater Cincinnati. Sites include but are not limited to: day care centers, housing rehab, drug rehab, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, food pantries, Meals on Wheels and inner-city schools.
